Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Marcuis the great
The coliseum tour was fantastic. Our tour guide Marcuis was exceptional. His knowledge of history was intriguing. He used jokes at the right time, while adding in music history to make certain points. We can't say enough about how awesome he was which made the tour not only very interesting, but fun.

Great Tour With Dario! 5 Stars!

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
Dario was an enthusiastic guide for our small tour of 6. He was knowledgeable, showing us illustrations throughout the 3-hour tour which were helpful to our understanding of the Forum and Colosseum. We did not see any other guides doing this. Dario was also concerned for our safety while walking on uneven surfaces and amongst throngs of people. We highly recommend a semi-private tour like this. It is well worth the additional cost.

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
Not my first tour of the Colosseum and I still learned a lot. Access to new areas that have opened up since before Covid and as ever you can really feel the atmosphere. Not the cheapest tour perhaps but great value. The guide (herself an archeologist) was clearly very passionate.

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
This was a fantastic tour. They had just completed the walkways through the floor of the Colosseum during Covid. My kids are major history buffs and the guide was excellent with them. We all learned a lot and we were able to see things that were available because of our small group. I would not recommend for little little kids as it is a lot of walking and not stroller friendly. If your kids or you are into history this a great tour.

Gladiator’s Gate: Special Access Colosseum Tour with Arena Floor
The Colosseum was fantastic! It included the Palical grounds and the Forum. Our was exceptional (actually more than exceptional). Do not remember his name (he is in one of the photos). His knowledge seemed endless, the pace was perfect, Got a good feel of the working of the Colosseum, and how the gladiators fared. Had a wonderful time!

Exclusive Gladiator Arena - The Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour
It was definitely worth the skip the line tickets & our guide was informative and clearly knew a lot about the history of the places we visited. He ensured we got plenty of photo opportunities in less busy spots. We spent most of the tour at the Colosseum but still had time to explore The Forum once the formal tour ended. For an afternoon tour we would recommend not expending too much energy in the morning as the tour is comprehensive.

Self-Guided Tour Colosseum Skip-the-Line Ticket
Having been let down by another viator company we found this self guided tour of the colosseum which is just a skip the line ticket. Having said that on the day we went the tickets at the colosseum kiosks were readily available with small cues. Two ladies arrived at the arch of Constantine held up a black flag and handed over the tickets not much more to say really. The colosseum itself was amazing all the displays have information which is clear and tells the history amazing place.

Gladiator’s Gate: Special Access Colosseum Tour with Arena Floor
We had a fantastic tour. It wasn't just of the Colosseum. We toured the Forum and Palantine Hill. Our guide was amazing, very knowledgeable, very energetic and informative. I learned things that I didn't previously know. Being able to go to the arena floor was a great experience. I highly recommend this tour!

Seeing the inside of the Colosseum, the tour guide was great, explaining in detail. We wandered around with plenty of time for photos.

Fast Track: Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour
We really enjoyed our tour of the Roman Forum and Colosseum. The tour guide was knowledgeable in the architecture and history. His presentation was a little dry and I would have liked to hear more stories but overall a good tour.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
