What To Expect

After hotel pickup in New Orleans, you're driven to the Oak Alley Plantation, located among the Great River Road sugar plantations alongside the Mississippi River. On arrival, stroll under majestic, 300-year-old oak trees leading up to the antebellum Big House, and take a tour of the opulent mansion with a guide dressed in period costume. The Greek Revival architecture was built in 1837 and later restored in 1925.

Wander the 25-acre (10-hectare) grounds at your own pace during your free time. Visit the blacksmith shop, snap photos of antique farm equipment, or peruse exhibits on slavery and the Civil War. Grab lunch and beverages at the restaurant or cafe (own expense) before the tour moves to the swamp.

Next, board the bus and drive to the site of your swamp tour. On arrival, board a 16-passenger airboat with stadium-style seating for a high-speed adventure through the swamp. You'll have unobstructed views of wildlife, including an up-close look at the star attraction: alligators.

Your captain is experienced at searching out these reptiles, even during hibernation in colder months. The airboat, propelled by a large fan that blows air from the back of the vessel, can produce speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). You'll ride in just inches of water into parts of the swamp that are inaccessible to traditional boats or vehicles.

Traveler Tips

I highly recommend doing this tour and hopefully, you'll get the awesome operators i had
You only have around 2 hours for the plantation tour, but we found that it was enough time to take the tour, walk the grounds and have dinner at the restaurant (which was very good).

Enjoyed both tours. Guides were very knowledgeable and the airboat captain was also very entertaining and candid. Bus driver did a great job interacting with the group and telling about the area but the ride was not very comfortable. Not a good idea to fill every seat with the length of the ride. We were last to board and got stuck in the back row. I spent the hour ride smashed against the side of the bus like a sardine feeling a little claustrophobic.

Great Tour!
Natasha_C, May 2023
It all started with our bus driver, Gary. He said he’s not typically a guide, but he did a great job and was very interesting to listen to. He was very knowledgeable and made sure the entire group was taken care of from start to finish. Next was the Oak Alley Plantation. Being able to stand in such a historic place was truly awesome. The foundation has done a magnificent job of keeping the entire lot beautiful and breathtaking. All guides at the plantation were professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. Finally came the airboat swamp ride - absolutely amazing! I can’t remember the guides name, but his boat was the Gator Raider and his co-worker, Steve, was a hoot! Rushing around on the water so fast and free was exhilarating! We got to go deep into the swamp and a few of the guides got up close and personal with some of the gators. Overall, this excursion is 100% a 5 star excursion and should not be missed!

Air boat
Gillian_C, Apr 2023
The air boat ride was amazing! Loved it! Would recommend to anyone. The Oak House Plantation could have presented a little bit more about the awfulness about the history of slavery, but what they did was done well.
Response from Host, May 2023
Thank you for the positive feedback, Gillian!

An amazing day
Bibi_v, Apr 2023
The plantation is very interesting, the story behind it even more. Well organised, the tour was done in small groups. The swamp tour was amazing. Our guide Jason knew everything and loved to share his passion, the swamp tour simply couldn’t be better! Thank you Jason. The pick-up, drop-off, the bus and last but not least the bus driver were all very good.

Maggie_M, Apr 2023
Weather was not cooperating :( Bus driver would be playing music and changing in the middle of a song to another song. The last part between the plantation and hotel he talked non stop giving me a headache. I know he meant well but still…
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Thank you for the feedback. We can understand that everyone's expectation of the the tour is different. However, the weather is out of anyone's control.

Ratiya_K, Apr 2023
Oak Alley Tour guide was wonderful but it went very quickly. Wish there had been more time and history on the enslaved that built the plantation. Airboat swamp tour was amazing! Our guide, Rocky, was incredibly knowledgeable and brave! We saw gators up close and personal!
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Thank you for the positive feedback, Ratiya!
Great tour and worth the money!
Denise_W, Apr 2023
Many experiences can be ruined with a bad start and ours was far from that!! Keith our bus driver was hilarious and kept the mood in the drive to the plantation light and fun. First stop was the plantation and I will say that they have done an AMAZING job of representing both the history of the Plantation owners as well as the enslaved people that worked there. A fun note was that they had drinks available for purchase which made strolling the grounds delightful with a mint julep in hand! Onto the swamp!! My husband and I have done these sorts of tours before but this was a first for our daughter. We got Rocky as our guide and he was FANTASTIC!! This was a far more fun and interesting tour than we have ever taken! His interaction with the wild alligators was amazing and respectful!! You can tell he loves his job!! This is a well priced tour for what you get!!
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Thank you for the five-star review, Denise!
Get only the airboats !
laurent_b, Mar 2023
the oak alley plantation is not of much interest to be visited. Photography inside the house is prohibited. the story of the family that is told to us, we praise the people who came to exploit these lands and the slaves who go with it, but not a word for the slaves precisely. how much was exploited on this plantation? how many died? could you just pay homage to them, rather than their torturers?!? regarding the bayous we loved our airboat experience! so if I had to do it again I would only do the bayous (which costs much less) and for the plantation I would probably choose the Lara plantation
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Thank you for your feedback. We can understand that everyone's expectation of the tour is different. We do not have any ownership over the plantation, but we will gladly forward the feedback.
