Ways to visit British Museum

Allow at least two hours for a British Museum tour, but don’t expect to see everything in one visit—it would take days to explore the entire museum and it’s easy to get lost. With so much to see, visiting with a tour guide is a convenient choice, and a small-group or private guided tour will ensure you maximize your time.

The British Museum London Guided Museum Tour - Semi-Private 8ppl Max
Although we have been to the British Museum on our own, taking a tour gave us a different perspective of the museum. Ellie our guide did an excellent job explaining in detail what she considered the important ones, and there are many.

The British Museum London Guided Museum Tour - Semi-Private 8ppl Max
I took a 2.5hr guided tour with Ellie and a few others in a small group. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. She asked us what we were interested in seeing in particular. I liked the fact that she talked about some of the more controversial pieces in the museum's collection. The tour started and ended on time. I would recommend this tour to people who want a quick overview of the British Museum.

Private London British Museum Tour for Kids and Families
The British Museum is incredible, and incredibly large. Having a private guide that knew our interests and knew how to navigate the museum was worth it! Our guide Lucy was so knowledgeable, and made sure to incorporate facts she thought our daughter would find fascinating.

The British Museum London - Exclusive Guided Museum Tour
Our personal tour guide Matilda is extremely knowledgeable and pleasant British British museum is just overwhelmingly gigantic. It needs someone like her to really explain everything and she did it well. This is a personal tour so it's just her and the 2 of us and that we really apprecdate.

British Museum & National Gallery of London Guided Tour - Semi-Private 8ppl Max
Unfortunately, the workers at the British Museum went out on strike the morning we were scheduled to visit the British Museum -- Bah! Our guide, Mathilda, immediately set uo a refund for that portion of the tour and arranged to meet us at the National Gallery in the afternoon. Mathillda was a superb guide through the galleries. We learned so much from this pleasant and knowledgeable lady. We highly recommend booking Mathilda for any tour she provides.

British Museum Highlights Private Guided Tour
This tour was so fun and educational! I would recommend it to anyone that wants to maximize their experience at the British Museum. Jack (our guide) shepherded us through the crowds so that we had the opportunity to see more, without the stress of competing with hundreds of other people. Jack's enthusiasm and knowledge really made it fun. It was GREAT!

Crash course in archaeology at the British Museum
Rossa was an amazing guide and really brought history to life through stories, observations, and games! The British Museum is massive and I was intimidated to visit. I was very pleased having a guide to point out important exhibits that I likely would have overlooked or not appreciated to their full extent on my own. Rossa placing these objects into historical context truly brought them back to life. I will return to the British Museum to confidently see more in the future!

What a world wonder here you could spend weeks here! So happy we had our guide Ainura to show us treasures and teach us details on so many items. Top notch tour for sure. I could image visiting for the first time without a guide.

When to visit British Museum

The museum is open daily, year-round. The quietest time to visit is on a weekday either when the doors open or after 3pm—school groups often visit in the mornings. Morning visitors should plan to visit the most popular exhibits (such as the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon sculptures) right away, while afternoon visitors might save these until later, when the crowds have left. Friday evenings are also a good time to visit, when there are normally fewer tour groups and families. Look out for special exhibitions, events, and film screenings throughout the year, too.

Highlights of the British Museum

For first-time visitors, the most popular exhibits include the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures from ancient Greece, the Persian Oxus Treasure, and the Ancient Egypt collection, which houses the Mummy of Katebet. Other must-see artifacts include the Portland Vase, which dates back to the 1st century BC; the Lewis chessmen, a collection of carved chess pieces dating back to the 12th century; and a statue from Easter Island, which is on display in the Living and Dying Gallery.
